Wood, composite or fiberglass: choosing the deck that suits you
Pressure-treated lumber is still the most affordable way to build a deck, and a well-built pressure-treated deck will last twenty years if it is stained or sealed every couple of seasons. Cedar and redwood cost more and look better, with natural resistance to rot and insects, but they need the same regular finishing. If you want the wood look without the annual weekend of staining, composite is the answer.
We build a lot of decks in TimberTech composite. The boards are made from recycled plastics and wood fibre with a protective cap, so they do not splinter, fade or need staining, and they carry a long manufacturer warranty against staining and fading. They cost more up front than pressure-treated boards and considerably less over the life of the deck. For homes near the water or where a fully waterproof surface is wanted — over a living space, for instance — a fiberglass deck system is the right choice, and we install those too.
The parts of a deck you cannot see
Most deck failures start at the ledger board, where the deck attaches to the house. If it is not flashed properly, water gets behind it, rots the rim joist and eventually the whole deck pulls away from the wall. On every deck we build, the ledger is flashed with a proper Z-flashing and self-adhering membrane and fastened with structural screws or through-bolts, never just nails. We check the ledger first on any deck we are asked to repair.
Footings are the other invisible part. New Jersey and Pennsylvania both require footings below the frost line — 36 inches in most of our service area — so the deck does not heave in a freeze-thaw winter. We dig and pour to code and have the footings inspected before the framing goes up. Railings, stair rise and run, guard heights and baluster spacing all follow the current residential code, which your township inspector will check.
Design: multi-level decks, sloped yards and outdoor rooms
A deck does not have to be a rectangle off the back door. On sloped lots — common in Hopewell, Hillsborough and the hillier parts of Bucks and Montgomery County — a multi-level deck steps down with the grade, turning an awkward yard into usable space at each level. We design decks with built-in benches, planters and privacy screens, integrated lighting in the stair risers and posts, and covered sections or pergolas so the deck is usable in a July sun and an October rain.
We will draw up the layout with you, show you samples of the decking and railing options, and give you one price for the whole thing, permit included.

Decks: questions we hear most
Do I need a permit to build a deck in New Jersey or Pennsylvania?
Almost always, yes. Any deck attached to the house, more than 30 inches off the ground or over a certain size needs a building permit in every township we serve, and the footings, framing and final are inspected. We prepare and file the permit application as part of the job and schedule the inspections.
How long does a deck take to build?
A straightforward single-level deck usually takes a week from breaking ground to the final inspection, once the permit is issued. Multi-level decks, covered sections and complicated railings add time. Permit turnaround varies by township and is often the longest part of the schedule.
Is composite decking worth the extra cost?
For most homeowners, yes. Composite costs more than pressure-treated lumber up front, but it never needs staining or sealing, does not splinter or warp, and carries a manufacturer warranty of 25 years or more. Over the life of the deck it is usually the cheaper choice, and it is certainly the easier one.
Can you repair my existing deck instead of replacing it?
Often. If the framing and footings are sound, we can replace decking boards, railings and stairs and re-flash the ledger for far less than a new deck. If the joists are rotted or the ledger has failed, replacement is the safer and usually cheaper route. We will tell you which after an inspection.
Do you build covered decks and pergolas?
Yes. We build roofed porches, covered deck sections and pergolas, with the roof framing tied into the house properly and flashed. A covered section makes a deck usable in far more weather and is a popular addition to a rebuild.
